CorningWare 2.5-qt. Oval Casserole with Lid - French White Review

The original "French White" Corningware was made of their famous pyroceramic glass, which could be used on the gas stove, put directly in the freezer, put under the broiler right from the freezer, and oh yes, also used in a microwave. And it was very unlikely to shatter if dropped. If you pounded on it with a hammer and nail you might have gotten it to break.

When World Kitchens bought the license from Corning, they decided to halt production of a line of cookware that would take anything and last forever, and dupe customers, especially brides, into thinking the stoneware "French White" was the same thing as the wonderful French White pyroceramic cookware previously available.

The pattern is attractive and can be used with any decor, but this stuff is not, repeat, really not, what people mean when they say "Corningware."

Le Creuset can do most of the above mentioned, but it being metal you cannot use it in the microwave. Stoneware cannot go on top of the stove, and repeated trips from the freezer to the oven will eventually cause it to craze and crack. And being stoneware, it will also chip, and break if dropped, etc. Pyrex glassware cannot go on the gas stove although you can take it from the freezer to the oven, and also microwave it.

The only product which could do anything was pyroceramic, and World Kitchens has chosen to remove it from the market because it is "too good."

They have recently brought back a few of the old square shapes, with the Cornflower, or plain white, calling it "vintage," but the French White shape is not making an appearance yet. If you want it, email them and ask for it!

Meanwhile, get Le Creuset for stovetop cooking and roasting (yes it is expensive but it lasts forever and cooks beautifully), and reheat things in Pyrex in the microwave.

We have a small 3 person office.This item is perfect for it.The one drawback is the small cord that comes with the item and the fact that it is a 3-prong plug so we had to get a 3-prong extension cord, but obviously, that is extremely minor.It is perfect if you want something very small for lunches and the like.

WaveBox Original Portable AC/DC Microwave Review

I have owned my Wavebox since it first became available late 2008.I love this thing but the cigarette lighter cable melted a few weeks later.So, we got in touch with customer service and they said they'd send a new cable right away.It's March 2009 (5 months later) and I still have not received the cable.I have been using the battery clamp in the mean time, with faster heating times so it's been great.I use the microwave every weekday for lunch.Just last week, as my food was cooking, smoke began bellowing out of the cooling fans and it smelled like a circuit board was melting.The unit still works but the amount of smoke it belches out is alarming.Customer service has been contacted once again.This time they have responded better and say a brand new unit is on the way.I hope it's true, they really seem like they want to stand behind their product and it seems so well built to me.Hopefully mine was just a fluke since I can't seem to find any information online of other people's units failing.

Update: after waiting and complaining via email we got a response saying how sorry they are and it's just Tim Frank and his wife trying to make this product happen.They are standing behind the product and really wanting to make things right.I received my brand new wavebox and it works great.It actually works better now that the cooking "rack" is porcelain, allowing a more uniform heating.As a side note, I took my first unit apart and was impressed with the construction of the unit.Hoping that the new unit will provide me with many more hot lunches.I'm trying to change my rating to a higher one but apparently cannot with Amazon.

Frigidaire Over The Range Microwave - White Review

Wife wanted an over the range microwave but we were space limited by the size of the cabinet above the range and that's the plus for this unit, it is not too tall. So if that's your deciding criteria, it's okay.

The minuses: the fan is noisy as is the microwave when it's on. The door sounds cheap when it's closed. Only one light setting, no auto off on the fan and limited cooking features. Yes it works but if size is not a factor look elsewhere.

KitchenAid : KBHS179SSS Microwave Review

Purchased in July 09, I was excited about some of the features of this microwave/convection oven and for the nice look of it above our matching regular oven.The microwave part does a good job heating evenly, popping popcorn, etc. I do not use a microwave for cooking (I believe it kills the nutrients in the food), so I love that this has a traditional convection cook setting.The microwave, for me, is primarily used for reheating the occasional leftovers, coffee, etc.I have used the 'crisp' feature several times and it is just ok.It takes a long time and is a little more hassle than just using the broiler or toaster since you have to preheat the crisping pan before you use the feature.You don't have to keep as close an eye on it as a broiler, though, since it shuts off after the programmed amount of time.The convection portion cooks nicely, although I have not used it as much as I'd like.I'm hoping to use it more to save energy by not having to heat the entire cavity of the regular oven.It's perfect for that small batch of cookies or side dish that cooks at a different temp than the rest of dinner.

Here are some of the drawbacks: the crisp element on the top of the microwave makes it much more difficult to clean if there were to be any splatters.Be sure to keep everything covered (sometimes difficult with kids around!).I was worried that the door opening forward would bother me, and it did take a few days - and one spilled cup of coffee - to get used to, but otherwise it has not bothered me.If you were shorter in stature or had weak arms (such as someone elderly that had bad shoulder joints or something), this might not be the best set up for you as pans do feel heavier and are more cumbersome coming out at shoulder height than they do from the regular oven.The other thing to keep in mind is that this requires 220 (like a regular oven), not a regular outlet.If you had a wall oven with a microwave above it, like we did, you will have to rewire.

Overall, I do like the look and the way it cooks, but I'm not sure if I'd spend the extra money and hassle or rewiring for this if I had to do it over again.

30" GOLD SELF CLEAN COMBO MICROWAVES Review

DO NOT buy Whirlpool Gold appliances! We remodeled our kitchen and bought Whirlpool Gold stovetop, oven & microwave combo wall unit. That was last year, and we are going to replace it all. Oven will not maintain a constant temperature. We followed instructions for adjusting temps but it still will not heat to a set temp. The cook top, beeps, flashes every time you damp wipe the surface. Sometimes when you wipe it the childproof lock kicks in and then when you use it later, it's a struggle to figure out why the burners will not start. Two burners have heat zone sizes and only one of those still works after only two years. The microwave is useful only for heating water. It WILL NOT do popcorn! After several attempts, at various settings, I gave up. Now when I want popcorn I go out to the garage and use my old LG unit. We paid a lot for this junk and will not make the Whirlpool mistake again.

Microkiln, Medium (Microwave Kiln) Review

I bought this product 3-4 months ago and followed their instructions step by step.Even bought a new microwave at their recommendation of 1000 watt.Have only had a few piece actually come out ok.These were thin dichro with thin clear on top.The other several dozen broke in process or burnt.No repeatability and 10 seconds could mean the difference between a good fuse and a burnt piece.Also is layer specific, meaning that the thickness of the glass plays a role and how long to fuse it.In the same batch you could have pieces that didn't fuse or pieces that burnt.I should have saved my money for the purchase of an actual kiln.Not worth all the time, experimentation, and glass.

I am far from an expert cook, and am pretty much into regular guy food.

So far I have made fresh corn, a really nice ( and simple ) chicken dish (included in booklet that comes with the product),fresh green beans and the BEST microwave "baked" potato's ever!

I am sure one could much more, but I am quite happy - perfect size for one or two people.

The packaging is high end, and the product looks great!

LG Microwave Over The Range With Pull Up Door, 2.2 Cu Ft - Stainless Steel Review

This microwave has some interesting feature such as the door and the oscillating tray.

However, it is totally overatedon its venting capacity. In fact the specs on venting are an exageration.

Also the electronic touch control pad failed after about a year.Finally the touch control pad locked itself ( child lock activated spontaneously!!!) and is now totally unresponsive.Tried the steps in the instruction manual to deactivate the child lock --no luck.The microwave is now unusable!!

I had been renting in an apartment community that went condo last year and had GE white appliances when I was renting that had no problems during my three years residing there.I bought a brand new refurbished condo in my community with new GE appliances and have had problems during the first year with some of the large kitchen appliances including this particular model microwave.After some research on line, I found similar defects reported from other individuals that bought this product.There are plastic brackets inside the handle that have melted off (and I checked all measurements from the stove and they meet specifications)and then you have holes where the brackets were.Unsafe for one and when I had GE come to service it, they offered me another door, which is course the same exact door even though I know other GE models have different doors that fit a particular model.The door is being sent to my house and I will again have to take time off for GE to install and hope that the brackets will not melt once again.I'd recommend putting your money down on a well-reputed appliance other than GE.

About 6 months ago, we upgraded from an ancient GE spacemaker - might have been 10 years old.So anything was going to be better.I wanted one that had a revolving turntable to spin the food and I wanted a stronger microwave.This one delivers. But Please - take my advice and don't try all the silly "auto sensor" features.Use manual choices and you can't go wrong. If you are upgrading from a lower watt microwave, be sure to adjust and lower your "usual" cook times.I burned popcorn and Weight Watcher Smart Ones meals at first so I speak from experience.My husband has yet to understand this concept and still burns food!

I have the black color instead of the bisque which I think looks nicer and is relatively easy to keep clean.However, I wish I had stuck with bisque color instead of getting black finish for our stove and dishwasher though because keeping those clean is MUCH MORE DIFFICULT.

I like that there is two optional racks for those holiday family meals when we're heating up multiple large items.

Microkiln, Small (Microwave Kiln) Review

I got this in a kit with lots of supplies of kiln paper, coe 90 glass and the protective gloves.I also had a 40% off coupon I used on it.So I figure the kiln itself only cost me about $45.I've been very successful with making small dichroic pendants.I've taken notes and made adjustments and am very pleased with the results.It's great to experiment with and so much quicker than using my big kiln and waiting 6 hrs for a cool down.Having fun and would buy again...and hoping this lasts for years.

I don't have an outside exhaust on the vent above my stove.The old vent had only grease filters while the new GE vent also has room for a charcoal filter.Great idea, but the filter is tough to find.Good thing Amazon has a partner that sells this thing.Also, it is pricey for a simple charcoal filter, but it was expensive everywhere else i looked, so the vendor was not overly high priced.

Sharp R-1520LK Over The Range Microwave Review

We had the lower model of R-1520 and we really liked it. Because of an accident we had to replace it (I didn't do it. I wasn't even home). We have a certain look in our kitchen and we like a microwave that has the control panel hidden. (Most controls look cheap and flimsy.) Although this model is not the highest rated out there it still does everything we need it to do. All I can see that it's missing is a center rack so you can place two items inside at once. I installed it by myself and found the instructions to be easy to understand and the installation simple. It is a bit heavy so you may need some help lifting it. My doctor says I should regain full use of my legs when my back is out of traction. (Just kidding.) If you are looking for a good-looking, well built, easy to operate, nice featured, easy to install microwave I say this is a good choice.

Whirlpool : GH7208XRY Microwave Review

I have owned this microwave for 11 months. The exhaust fan is very load and not very efficient, We tried vented and non vented, neither work very well. Have had the fan repaired 2 times. The door hand broke and had to have that repaired.Now the fan for the convection oven needs to be replaced.It also gets so hot its melting the interior plastic parts.We bought an extended warrantee [where America shops] with a lemon clause but they are refusing to replace it ! Extremely overpriced and would not recommend.

This microwave looks good, but as a microwave that cannot generate microwave, it is useless.

I had used several microwave stoves before, some of them around $50, some around $100, but none of them stopped working within 3 yrs--except this expensive one. We called GE customer service, they told me the magnetron tube was broken, and they also told me this happens because, statistically, the failure rate of this magnetron tube is 3-4 percent. I don't need to be a magnetron-tube engineer to understand this rate. As a regular customer, I just know this failure rate is too high to be accepted.

If GE continues to make this kind of products, it will become another GM soon, and they can only depend on the government bailout to survive.

I havehad this microwave for two years now. It is easy to use, works just fine and looks nice and sleek in the kitchen. I use it mostly for heating up food rather than cooking it, and for popcorn, etc- fast things. I have large fingers and have no problem with the size of the "buttons" . My last one, an IntelliChef, was more expensive than this and now I wonder why I spent all that money on it ( it started smoking after 6 years of use) when this Sharp would have been fine.I just edited this review (today's date is 12/7/2009) as my original review (Nov. 2007) was written shortly after I bought it. On another note I would not buy their refrigerator freezer side by side because the refrigerator part does not keep your food cold.If you have a "good" refrigerator and you turn up the fridge part it normally makes your water and milk turn to icicles.But this one did not.I turned up both of them and the freezer was really cold, but the fridge part did not seem colder, very bad!

We needed to replace our SS Samsung microwave after 6 faithful years. Wanted a big SS micro without too many unnecessary buttons, this fit the bill! I give three stars because it does cook exceptionally well but I don't know how long that will last. I purchased this microwave almost a year ago and should have taken it back to the store immediately because the noise makes me think it might be defective and not last. Within the first week of using it it started having a loud buzz while cooking not just in defrost which can be typical but on high as well but I kind of thought this is normal. It cooks really well so I figured it is probaly okay and I let it go. Then within months the turntable started vibrating so much I thought I didn't install it properly after cleaning. I kept taking it out and turning over the ring it sits on thinking maybe I have it upside down or something, but still noisy. I had a service repairman come out and he replaced the turntable motor which quieted the turntable but the loud buzz while cooking remains. He said it's just the sound the magnatron tube makes and is normal. Since it cooked well I thought okay guess it's fine and I am just being too picky or sensitive and worrying about nothing. Then I was at my sister's who has pretty much the same model but an earlier version. It is so quiet it made me realize that my microwave is incredibly noisy in comparison and maybe isn't normal after all. Her microwave is several years old and is still quieter. I am disappointed and leery to say the least. Recently my son came out for a visit was using the microwave and asked what is the matter with it? He said sounds alarming. Since he noticed it I figured maybe there is something wrong so I contacted customer service again and since a repairman had already checked it out and temperatures checked out okay just noisy, nothing to be done. So I guess I will just have to wait and see if he is right. I will let you all know how long it lasts. So for now it gets three stars cooking, zero for confidence in the product.

Frigidaire FPMV189KF 1.8 Cu. Ft. OTR Microwave - 1000 Watts, Side Controls Review

A decent microwave, looks nice, spacious, which also makes it larger.

Things that work well:

Cooks very evenly
offers alot of space (possibly unnecessary space)
Quick start buttons
Soft start and quiet when it operates, which is very nice.
Lights are bright.
Installation was easy and sensible
Things that dont:

Clock is kind of dim. Hard to see at even reasonable distances during the day. Also the numbers are not centered in the LED space, looks off.

You can not program the micro to cook when the timer is operating. This is really uncommon, most microwaves offer this, so keep it mind. Basically the Micro becomes a giant kitchen timer and nothing more when you use the timer feature. Terrible design if you ask me.

Alot of "convenience" buttons that quite honestly are not very convenient. Makes you have to refer to the manual alot to remember what exactly they do and removes control from the user often overcooking the food.

Sticks out from the cabinet face a little more than most Micro ovens, and the handle is comfortable but obtrusive.

I personally only use a MIcro for basic cooking and reheating, this one is a little more than I would have ever needed as far as features go. I bought it mainly to match off with the range, apparently Frigidaire uses a coating on the certain SS appliance (professional and Gallery) it is has a different look than their regular (non-coated) SS models. Overall I am satisfied with it, but if matching is not your important, go for something else at this price point. You will probably get convection and the logic for operating the machine will probably make more sense.

We put in a totally new kitchen and chose this microwave to be installed above our range.Excited, we used every cooking feature and were so excited - at first.We noticed first the paint on the inside of the door was peeling and falling off in pieces on to the stove.Called and talked to Whirlpool; they had me call their licensed repairman in our area.We had to pay I believe it was $120 for him to come out and agree there is a problem but the company would not recognize there was a problem, saying they had never heard of this problem and it must have been something we had done or were doing.Checking the web I found many stories of people with the same problem but the company still insisted they had not heard of it.Now, today, my daughter was using the microwave, simply to reheat something, and it began to smoke and smell extremely strong like electrical burning.I am now afraid of this unit and will try, again, to find more information on this problem.We paid a lot of money for this unit and have now had it for 2 years.(I will find the exact date before I call Whirlpool).I do not expect them to agree to the problem again.I would not ever recommend this unit to anyone!!!

BUT LIKE THE SQUARE ONE THE BEST AS U CAN FIT MORE IN IT THAN THE ROUND ONE.I COOK EVERYTHING FROM HOT DOGS TO BACON TO PASTA TO BROCCOLI.U NAME IT I HAVE PROBABLY COOKED IT IN MY SQUARE ORKA PAN.EVEN MACARONI SAUCE.I GOT MY BLACK ONES ON THE Q".

A COUPLE OF HIN"TS....IF STAINING BOTHERS U THEN WAIT UNTIL THEY HAVE IT IN BLACK AS SILCONE DOES STAIN.

DO NOT USE ANY KIND OF ABRASIVE CLEANER OR TEFLON TYPE SPONGE TO CLEAN AS IT AFFECTS THE SILICONE.

IF UR RECIPE CALLS FOR GREASE THE PAN THEN DO SO WITH OIL OR BUTTER BUT NO PAM LIKE SPRAS.OF COURSE, NO SHARP KNIVES.

TO GET A GOOD SEAL MAKE SURE THE PAN HANDLES ARE EAST/WEST AND THE LID HANDLE IS NORTH/SOUTH.....SEEMS LIKE THE LID GETS "SUCKED IN" WHEN PUT THIS WAY AND FOOD COOKS BETTER AND QUICKER.

THE RECIPE BOOKLET I GOT WAS NOT MUCH HELP, SO I USED MY IMAGINATION AND ADJUSTED MY COOKING TIMES AND VOILA.... EVERY THING COMES OUT DELISH.

I USE MINE IN A TOASTER OVEN AS I DO NOT OWN A MICROWAVE AND CANT REMEMBER HOW TO WORK MY STOVE OVEN (LOL)_

I have never had any problems whatsoever with this microwave.I've had one in my apartment for a couple years, using it almost every day.I bought one for my parents and it's been solid for them as well.

It's probably the smartest microwave I've used, too.You can set the kitchen timer while the unit is already microwaving, and vice versa.Pressing +30 seconds will start the microwave immediately, and you can continue to press +30 seconds to add more time.Have you ever used a microwave that doesn't allow these functions?It's a nightmare.Also, you can press one of the preset buttons and just walk away; the unit will start microwaving after a couple seconds.

No problems with heating, either.It does what you expect it to.Clean and intuitive user interface.You won't be able to change the alert sound, but that's because this is a microwave, not an f'ing toy.

this is the second sharp microwave i've had and with both, the digital display failed after brief episodes without power.unfortunately, the failed part costs as much as a new microwave.the first microwave we threw out.the second is still under warranty and will be fixed.sharp's authorized service center advised me that this 'happens a lot with sharps' and told me that they currently had seven more in the shop for the same problem.in fact, the part is on back order and i'm waiting for it before my oven can be serviced!sharp denies a problem!i find it hard to believe that they are unaware of huge orders for this 'board' that controls the digital display.my advise is to stay away from sharp microwaves until sharp fixes this obvious problem.
